About the Office

Mission Statement

The Mission of the University of Chicago’s Investments Office is to provide stewardship of the University’s Investment Assets. This includes managing the University’s endowment to ensure that it benefits both current and future generations.

Under oversight of the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees, the Office of Investments is responsible for managing the investment assets of the University. Portfolio assets totaled about $6.8 Billion at March 31, 2008.

The endowment, called Total Return Investment Pool (TRIP), accounted for $6.4 Billion or 93.6% of total assets. The Investment Committee approves the TRIP Investment Policy with the objective of achieving high returns at acceptable levels of risk. The current portfolio invests in diversified asset classes including global stocks and bonds, real estate, natural resources, private equities, and absolute return strategies. A combination of active internal management and targeted external advisors are employed by the University to manage TRIP.
