Making Gifts of Securities

The Types of Gifts the University Accepts

The University of Chicago gratefully accepts all cash gifts and gifts of securities that are readily valued and readily converted to cash. The University does reserve the right, however, to accept gifts of non-marketable assets, real or personal property, closely held stock, or other restricted securities on a case-by-case basis. Generally, we accept any restricted security that is easily valued and can be sold within twelve months.

The University of Chicago has often and efficiently processed gifts of mutual fund shares and Rule 144 Restricted securities and usually welcomes such gifts. However, other non-liquid assets carry with them additional risks, costs and complexities that necessitate a quick review and subsequent approval prior to the acceptance of such gift. Please contact the Development and Alumni Relations at (773) 834-1072 if you desire to donate a non-marketable gift.
